  1. I love Momma Sarah. I know she was a woman of great faith, but she was also a woman of great doubts. Remember it was her idea that Abraham lay with Haggar because she felt G-d wasn’t working fast enough. I often find myself asking G-d to work on my timetable instead of changing to His.

  4. I am most like Devorah, the judge. I am all about justice. I get truly indignant when I hear about evil getting away without punishment.

  5. My Jewish doppleganger? Hmmmmm. Of the bible characters, I’d choose Judith… :-)

  6. I’d say my Doppelganger would have to be Jennifer Grey (before plastic surgery). OK, ok… so I probably watched Dirty Dancing one too many times… :P

  7. Definitely Vashti. She’s always given a bad rap in Hebrew School, but I think that refusing to dance naked for your husband and his drunken poker buddies, knowing full well that you will be kicked out on your ass, is pretty heroic.

  8. I ALWAYS dressed up like Queen Esther for Purim (except the year Titanic came out and I dressed like Kate Winslet) but secretly, I always wanted to be Vashti… wear a sexy costume and tell the boys what to do… But alas, the rabbi’s daughter always had to be the “good” queen.

    Isn’t Vashti just misunderstood?

  9. People always tell me I look like Natalie Portman but I’m not a vegetarian like she is. Personality wise, I’d say I’m most like Miriam because I like to sing.

  10. This time of year I think of Queen Esther. Ironically, my Hebrew name is Esther. I admire women who possess inner beauty and outward strength! Queen Esther was an amazing Jewish Woman who had both these qualities. She will always be remembered.I hope I have as many fans as Queen Esther after I am gone. Today, however, I shall make a difference and continue with my many mitzvot. The more good I can achieve today, here and now, the more it will make a difference later on for many others in this world!

    Shalom,
    Ellen

  11. Well, i have been told a few times in my life that I look like Winona Ryder. When she was in BeatleJuice. I’m not sure if that is a compliment or not. I know her dad is Jewish, but apparently she described herself as Jewish.

Biblically, I think I am more like Chana.

  17. Biblically,my doppelganger has to be Chana…She was a prayer extraordinaire! And while I don’t claim to be on her level, not even close, I aspire to become more like her in my prayer life. Having her name has always motivated me to work on cultivating a stronger prayer life.

  18. King David is the biblical figure with whom I most closely identify. He had the best intentions but was so utterly and humanly flawed. I can definitely relate to that. Plus, David is my middle name, and my closest friend (my brother) is named Jonathan.

  24. Jonah, the clowny ‘prophet’ running away from the task given by God, falling asleep when life is a mess and having a taste for melodrama, slightly aloof but with heaps of irony.

    Comment by Frances — February 18, 2010 @ 2:33 pm

  25. King David, even though I’m a woman. He loved G-d so much he danced. And G-d loved him; even with all his faults G-d never abandoned David, and David never stopped loving G-d. He was brave under fire, and endured great personal pain and survived it.

  28. I’m a miriam- helping those in need as well as a continuous source of optimism and looking out for those I care about. As for my doppleganger Amy Adams- the girl next door type, sweet and sincere we share also he ability to charm with our sense of humor.

  32. I identify with Esther and the King. Esther because of her faithfulness to her people. For that, G-d filled her with love for the King. The King because he was smitten by her genuiness and sincerety and therefore, he kept an open mind toward her. That is why when she approached the throne unbidden, he raised his staff to save her life and G-d opened his heart and mind to the truth about the evil Haman.

  37. I’m going Moses. I live in Texas and Charlton Heston was Moses. Furthermore, when I get angry I like to break stuff cave man style. When I buy a case of beer I often drink it from the middle out, effectively “parting” the beer sea. Im not really a leader of men, but once or twice a vagrant has followed me about asking for cash. Also, I rock the fly beard which is pretty Moses, though I dont wear girl jeans which – lets face it – if Moses was around he’d probably rock. Fricken’ hipster.

  38. Tamar is my idol – she dressed up like a prositute to seduce her father in law to take what was rightfully hers. Even her father in law saw her righteousness in what she did.
For a woman to go against what was “right” and “proper”, she’s a rebel in my book – and therefore I am most like her than anyone else in Jewish history.

  43. My doppelganger would be Bette Midler, who, by the way is also Jewish. We are both creative, although she has a very unique voice, unlike me, who really cannot sing, but I can identify with her energy and sense of freedom.

My Jewish doppelganger would be Devorah the Judge. Since I am in the field of law, it is somewhat of an occupational hazzard to solve problems for others and try to be as fair as possible, although fairness and justice do not always equate. It is surely the case that Deborah had this same dilemna most of the time.

  44. Queen Esther was brave and daring.

  46. My favourite Jewish heroine is Judith. I’m a Judaic Studies major and I run into a lot of cool Jewish women that I admire like Beruriah, Yael, Devorah, etc, but Judith is definitely my favourite. She was not only clever but also sexy and fierce, which is everything you need in a strong Jewish role model. For those who don’t know her story it is in the Book of Judith.
Judith, a beautiful widow, seduces the general Holofernes (dispatched by Nebuchadnezzar) in his own camp, gets him drunk, and then decapitates him, taking his head back to the Jews. Leaderless, the Assyrians leave.

And that makes Judith my Jewish doppelganger.

  58. My doppleganger is the prototypical Jewish mother. She loves her children and worries about them, she cooks, she saves, she sacrifices for her family. She is beloved but misunderstood and she’s in all our Jewish DNA.
